KC Melting Pot Theatre 2018-2019 Season

Radio Golf
On Shoulders Now

The Green Book Wine Club Train Trip
Funnyhouse of a Negro

KCMPT’s 6th season includes exciting works from African American Kansas City area playwrights Michelle Tyrene Johnson and Harvey Williams.
Kansas City’s premier African American theater company names it’s
2018-2019 season “Journey Now” mapping the past and present paths that highlight the great resilience of people of color in the wake of emotional, economic, and societal trauma.
The season launches with August Wilson’s Radio Golf, the most contemporary of August Wilson’s 10-play cycle chronicling African-American life in the 20th century.  Michelle Tyrene Johnson’s The Green Book Wine Club Train Trip follows Wilson with a time-bending story of an African American women’s book club on a train journey that revisits the startling similarities between a Jim Crow past and the present.  Harvey Williams’ On Shoulders Now, takes KCMPT into the holiday season with a poignant story of extended family in the subcultures of American life that asks us to question controversial topics such as life on the streets, poverty, and immigration to reveal the ways marginalized communities find sanctuary spaces.  The season wraps up with a revival of Adrienne Kennedy’s 1964 Obie Award-winning play Funnyhouse of a Negro, a chilling avant-garde work written during the Black Arts movement that reflects on racial identity and the horrible effects of internalized racism on the Black community.
Together, this compelling line-up asks audiences to consider how social, cultural and political circumstances shape our realities and how power limits who can rise above those challenges.
